Micro-encapsulation- What is it? How does it improve our insect repellents?

Main Image

Within our experienced team here at Pyramid Travel Products, there are several hands-on and knowledgeable chemists. These individuals have been working closely with our marketing and manufacturing experts to review current products in our travel health ranges, and to test and propose ways to improve our travel health products.

We are at the forefront of new technologies and we want to be able to protect you as best we can.

Three of our insect repellent sprays have been adapted through the use of micro-encapsulation technology. These include Trek Sensitive, Trek Midge and Tick, and Trek Ultra.

What is Micro-Encapsulation?

To put it into simple terms, this is the process where the active ingredient in our repellent, such as DEET or Saltidin®, is encased within a shell which allows it to be released gradually over the period of wear. In short, this means that from a single application of your insect repellent spray, you will be protected from bites for up to 12 hours.

The active ingredient will still work as effectively as it would without the shell, but we wanted to be able to provide you with all day protection and greater convenience, as we know the hassles of having to remember to re-apply! However, we do still advise on reapplication after being in water.

Another huge benefit of using micro-encapsulation technology is that it provides extra resilience to sweat. Being a travel health company, we know that many of you who purchase our insect repellent sprays like to keep active while exploring the great outdoors. Again, through micro-encapsulation, we can bring you peace of mind that your repellent will still protect you from insect bites when you are active outside.

More on our Insect Repellent Sprays with Micro-Encapsulation Technology:

Trek Sensitive

This DEET-Free insect repellent has been designed specifically for those with sensitive skin, to not cause inflammation or irritation. Our Trek Sensitive insect repellent contains 20% micro-encapsulated Saltidin®, and is clinically proven to be as effective as a repellent spray containing 50% DEET. This repellent is also perfect for family use as it can be applied to children from the age of 2, and pregnant women.

Trek Midge & Tick

Trek Midge & Tick is also DEET- Free and contains 20% micro-encapsulated Saltidin®, as well as added moisturising plant extracts. This repellent is perfect for those hiking in Scotland, whether in the summer months when swarms of highland midges are active, or when walking through thick grasslands where a tiny tick may be lurking.

Midges are a nuisance to outdoor enthusiasts, however there are extra steps that you can take to protect yourself from the Highland Midge, so have a look at our ‘How to Guide’.

This repellent is also family-friendly, as it can be used to help protect children from the age of 2 from Lyme disease caused by ticks, and other biting insects.

Trek Ultra

This is our ultimate mosquito repellent and DEET Spray, providing up to 12 hours protection from a single application! This repellent contains 30% micro-encapsulated DEET to protect you from mosquito-borne diseases transmitted from the Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes, known for spreading diseases such as Dengue Fever, Zika Virus and so on to humans.

We recommend that this insect repellent is used in high risk areas. This repellent can also be used on children from the age of 2, again with the added benefit of being sweat and splash resistant.

Application of Micro-encapsulation Repellents

Regarding the spray application, due to the addition of using advanced micro-encapsulation technology for some of our repellents sprays (as listed above), the viscosity of the spray is slightly thicker, which does require you to apply the insect repellent onto the palms or backs of your hands to spread the insect repellent over exposed areas of skin. The micro-encapsulation is used to allow you to be effectively protected for up to 12 hours, whilst also increasing resistance to sweat and splashes.

Therefore, applying this spray is similar to how you would apply moisturiser or suncream. For application of the repellent onto your face, we recommend not spraying directly onto your face, but again spray a small amount onto the palm or back of your hand and lightly pat onto your face.

Remember to always wash your hands thoroughly after application.
